OLD SAN JUAN. Through large arched windows, you can look out over Plaza Colón as you enjoy either vegetarian or non-vegetarian dishes at this truly versatile café that also features a muesli energy bar. The menu is made up of creative salads, sandwiches, pastries, freshly squeezed juices, and organic coffees. For lunch or dinner eggplant tofu or veggie pizza topped off with frozen margaritas are excellent choices. Live street musicians stroll in to entertain from time to time. Features great outdoor covered seating as well.

OLD SAN JUAN. Looking for a place to stock your picnic basket before going out to explore the island? Café Zaguán has tasty take-away to tempt the most finicky traveler. Pulled pork quesadillas, soups, salads and sandwiches abound on the lunch menu. For dinner, the casual sidewalk café turns more formal with a menu that fuses Puerto Rican ingredients with Asian preparations, producing such results as plantains with sauteéd shrimp in wine sauce.

OLD SAN JUAN. This dark, sophisticated spot in the baroque Banco Popular also offers a terrace with great views of the ships in the harbor. Black and white dominate in a bistro space accented with marble tables and a Steinway grand piano. Owner Carli Muñoz used to play with the Beach Boys (among many other groups) and entertains nightly at the café. The menu is a continental tour that includes seared loin of lamb and duck rissolé.

CONDADO. This Internet cafe offers affordable, reliable access for visitors who want to check their email, monitor their stocks or just surf the 'net. Access is available in 15-minute increments ­ an entire hour is less than $10. Hot and cold coffee concoctions, muffins, snacks and cold drinks are available to accompany keyboard clicking.

CABO ROJO. 15 minutes outside of Mayaguez, the tarpon on the menu of this casual establishment is so fresh you can see it swimming as you sit on the enclosed deck that is built out over the water, or from the windows of the interior dining room. Name your craving: conch, red snapper, lobster, shrimp and steaks are all cooked to your specifications.
